A Winter Grammar Review Your Students Will Love

There’s something about January that makes the school days feel extra long. Maybe it is the cold weather, maybe it is the string of indoor recess days, or maybe it is simply the slow shift back into routines. Whatever the reason, students need engaging winter grammar activities to help them get back into the school routine and refocus. That is why I love using simple, meaningful grammar review activities in January. When students have something fun and purposeful to work on, the whole classroom starts to feel alive again.

Winter Grammar-Review-1

To help ease back into the routine after winter break, January is the perfect time to tap into some fun grammar review activities. I promise – that is not an oxymoron! This is where the Snow Monster Digital Escape Room shines. It gives your students the excitement they crave while giving you real, targeted practice for the skills that always need extra attention this time of year.

If you want something that rebuilds stamina, supports your ELA standards, and keeps your class truly engaged, this winter grammar review is exactly what you need.

Why Digital Escape Rooms Work So Well in January

After a long winter break, review is the name of the game. But let’s face it. . . some grammar review activities are just boring. But. . . these winter grammar escape rooms work because they turn review into a mission. Students never feel like they are repeating old skills. Instead, they are working through puzzles, solving clues, reading carefully, and checking their thinking as they progress through each step. It feels like a game, but the academic work underneath is solid.

Escape rooms naturally encourage:

  • critical thinking
  • problem solving
  • vocabulary application
  • reading for detail
  • collaboration
  • team building
  • perseverance
  • motivation

Students want to keep moving because they want to solve the mystery. You get meaningful practice without needing stacks of worksheets, and your classroom immediately feels more focused and settled.

Winter Grammar Review: Meet the Snow Monster

All three versions of this escape room share the same engaging winter-themed storyline. Dexter the deer wandered a little too close to the Snow Monster’s cave and is now trapped inside. The other woodland animals need your students to help rescue him. To break the locks and save Dexter, students must search the forest for hidden links that lead to puzzles, clues, and challenges. Every clue solved brings them one step closer to setting Dexter free.

The theme is playful and adventurous, and students stay hooked because each puzzle reveals a new piece of the mission. Even students who usually check out become invested in the storyline and want to do their part to help save Dexter.

Engagement will be high with these winter grammar review escape rooms. And. . . we all know that learning improves with active engagement. So this winter review activity is off to a great start.

How the Snow Monster Escape Room Works

This is a fully digital escape room built in Google Slides with puzzle activities in Google Forms and Google Sheets. Students work through the interactive experience by:

  • clicking hidden clues
  • reading directions carefully
  • completing content-based puzzles
  • typing answers or choosing correct responses
  • unlocking secret codes
  • revealing symbols or words that help break the final lock
Winter-Grammar-Review-2

Everything is already built for you, so all you have to do is share the link with your class. Students can work independently, in partners, or in small groups. Because the puzzles are self-checking, the activity practically runs itself while you move around the room, listen to conversations, and support students as needed. It’s no prep in its truest form!

Most classes take about forty-five minutes to an hour to complete the full escape room, depending on the skill version you choose.

Choose the Version That Matches the Skill You Want to Review

The Snow Monster storyline stays the same in all three versions, but the academic focus changes, so you can choose the skill your students need most. Here is a peek at what each version helps you review.

1. Reviewing Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homophones

If your students need vocabulary review after winter break, then you need Escape the Snow Monster Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homophones. The puzzles encourage students to think about word relationships instead of memorizing definitions. Each clue strengthens their understanding by asking them to apply their knowledge in real contexts.

Students will:

  • Read a sentence, find a highlighted word, and choose its antonym
  • Complete multiple-choice questions where they select the correct homophones
  • Drag and drop words to show synonyms for bolded words in a sentence
  • Select synonyms, antonyms, or homophones for the provided words

Every correct answer reveals a symbol or code that brings students one step closer to rescuing Dexter. Even your reluctant readers will stay invested because the puzzles feel like a challenge rather than a test.

2. Make Irregular Past Tense Verbs Fun

Verbs are a mid-year trouble spot for many students, especially irregular past tense forms. This version of Escape the Snow Monster Digital Escape Room helps students slow down and analyze sentences while still enjoying the fast-paced feel of an escape room.

Winter-Grammar-Review-5

Students will:

  • Identify the verb in a sentence and change it to the past tense
  • Choose the correct verb to complete a sentence
  • Sort verbs by tense through drag-and-drop puzzles
  • Answer multiple-choice questions that ask them to identify verb tenses

This version is perfect for reinforcing grammar skills without overwhelming students. The puzzles guide them step by step, and the storyline keeps motivation high.

3. Practice for Conjunctions, Interjections, and Prepositions

If your students need a deeper understanding of parts of speech, specifically conjunctions, interjections, and prepositions, then this is the winter grammar review game for you. This version of Escape the Snow Monster gives them real practice that goes beyond circling words on a worksheet. Students will:

  • Type prepositions from a sentence to unlock part of a secret clue
  • Identify conjunctions, with each correct answer revealing a symbol used to decode a phrase
  • Drag and drop interjections to complete sentences
  • Complete multiple-choice questions to label each word as a conjunction, interjection, or preposition

These skills can be tricky to master, but the escape room format helps students talk through their reasoning and check their work along the way.

Easy Ways to Use the Escape Room in Your Classroom

You can use this digital escape room in so many flexible ways. Some of my favorite options include:

Whole group review:
If you are limited on devices for students, just project the forest map and the hidden clues. Students can work individually or in teams to solve each puzzle while you facilitate discussions and guide thinking. It’s a great way to get a good feel for where students are on these grammar skills.

Small groups or partner practice:
If you have the ability to divide your class into partners or small groups and give each a device, then this choice will work best for you. Each group can work at its own pace as it completes the escape room challenges. Students support each other as they review important grammar concepts and solve the escape room puzzles.

Individual practice:
If you have a classroom with 1-to-1 devices, you have lots of options. You can choose one of the options above or have students work through the escape room on their own. They will complete the puzzles at their own pace, and you get a clear look at what they understand without the pressure of a formal assessment.

Sub plans:
Need a sub plan activity that is easy to facilitate and sure to keep your students engaged? This is it! Because everything is digital and self-directed, it is an easy activity to leave for a sub. It checks all the boxes when it comes to an activity that any sub would love to have on the lesson plans.

You’ve Got This

    1. I have done an escape room with 1st grade before. They needed more help and guidance along the way, but they got the hang of it and loved it. I have a 1st grade Save the Zoo escape room that is more basic if you want to try one out.

  4. I haven’t tried escape rooms in my classroom this year yet, but I think I will soon. Thank you for sharing the pros of using this with our students.

    1. I think the digital escape rooms are more engaging. Students have to figure out the codes by answering the questions correctly in order to move on. Incorrect codes won’t let them escape so they work harder to get it right. I love pairing students and listening to them talk it through!

  5. Students love doing escape rooms. I’ve not done a digital one.. Will definitely try one. Paper ones are so time consuming to prepare!

  6. This looks like so much fun. and would definitely keep kids engaged. I’ve been wanting to try escape rooms for years but haven’t yet. Thank you for sharing.
